Were the trees healthy? Usually the borers attack only stressed trees. Some of the most common stressors in addition to drought are poor drainage, compacted soils, girdling roots from staying in the nursery pot too long, weed trimmer wounds, and planting the tree too deep and not having the root flare exposed. I recommend having a certified arborist (see ISA) evaluate the trees and make recommendations for treatment.
