We live closeby this cement processing plant and always notice a heavy white residue on all our outdoor plants and cars, which obviously is downwind from this plant. Been reading a lot lately from about the elevated health risks associated with certain emmissions from cement plants, particularly mercury. Is there any information or any studies done about the immediate surrounding area to the plant? Should I be concerned? Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

It is my understanding that mercury emissions generally are associated with cement manufacturing, rather than concrete batch plants. The concrete plants south of your neighborhood mix cement, aggregate, and water to make concrete. The white dust is likely associated with limestone possibly coming from the mixing process and/or dust from the road surface around the plants. If you are concerned about the emissions from the plant, I suggest you contact the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality which is the regulatory agency charged with regulating air emissions. The area office is located in Fort Worth and their contact number is 817-588-5800. I also will ask our code enforcement office to check into the issue.
