Why is there not a left turn signal for Westbound El Dorado at the Wal Mart light before FM 423?

At the Wal-Mart traffic signal, Eldorado Parkway is a two-lane roadway with no left-turn lanes, which has limited what we can do with the signal timing for this intersection. Currently we provide a leading left-turn arrow for eastbound traffic because it is more critical that we consistently clear out the traffic between Wal-Mart and FM 423 so it does not gridlock the FM 423 intersection. In addition, this operation allows us to hold westbound traffic until a time that the FM 423 intersection is ready to serve it (so we don't gridlock the Wal-Mart intersection).

From our observations over time, this has served the intersection well and westbound left-turns have been able to go towards the end of the cycle when the eastbound traffic has passed. We have not received any complaints about it to date.

Now that TxDOT is widening Eldorado Parkway, it will be six lanes wide with left-turn lanes in about a year. At that time, we will have more flexibility to operate the Wal-Mart traffic signal with left-turn arrows in both directions if necessary.
