My 11 year-old wants an electric or motor scooter. What are the requirements or laws or scooters? Can they be used on sidewalks? Neighborhood streets? Required protective equipment? Thanks.

Scooters are not legal to operate on the street or sidewalk. The same rules apply to them as motorcycles. The scooters can only be used on private property, with permission of the property owner. We always recommend a helmet and protective gear.

There has been an on-going issue with scooters going down Kirby and through Autunmwood Park Sub.
2 nights ago the police were called to the area. Last night the young men were out again, this time with mufflers on their scooters. They are not on private property. If they operate them in the Vineyard Apts. has someone from that complex granted them permission to do so. They are disruptive even with a muffler on.

I heard that Frisco passed a new scooter ordinance. Can you provide more detail and when it went into effect.

Beginning November 14, 2003, children can only ride motorized scooters on sidewalks within the City of Frisco.

On November 4, the Frisco City Council approved an ordinance that prohibits anyone under 18 from riding motorized scooters on public roadways. The Frisco ordinance also requires minors to wear helmets when riding such scooters. The new law does require children to “walk” their scooters across streets. Adults may still ride the scooters on Frisco streets.

Parents and/or children, who ignore the new law, could face a fine of up to $500.
