A certain visitor to our next door neighbor frequenty parks directly in front of our mailbox. Is there a law prohibiting this? Our mailman has to get out of his car to delivery our mail. In past places we lived, the mailman would place a notice in the mail box or on the car warning that future delivery of mail would not occur with such a violation. We've seen no warnings, but feel sorry for the mailman. Please advise.

Mr. Lenhardt,

There is no state statute or city ordinance covering parking in front of a mailbox. I do not know if this violates any postal regulations or not. I have seen mail carriers place warnings both in the mailbox and on cars regarding blocking the mailbox, so I know they do it here in this area as well. My assumption is it is discretionary on their part as to if and how they address it. I would suggest you either speak with your mail carrier or leave him a note so he knows it is not your car. You may wish to speak to your neighbor as well, particularly if the mail carrier advises he will not deliver because of the obstruction. If you have a HOA, they may be able to send a letter to the offending neighbor.

Please feel free to call me if you have further questions.
