I know that an architecture firm has been chosen, but how about location? Has a location for the facility been selected? If no final decision has been made, is there a short-list of possible sites being discussed?

Dear Anonymous,

Thanks for your note regarding the location of the future Family Recreation and Aquatic Center. A permanent location for the future recreation facility has not been chosen at this time.

We will be working with the Architect and the Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan consultant to help provide input on where a logical location for this unique facility would be best suited. Staff will work with the consultants and provide input to the City Council for final consideration.

I look for this process to begin within the next month or so. Should you have any further questions regarding this, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Rick Wieland

Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for your message regarding an update on the possible location of the new recreation center that was approved in the September 2002 bond election.

Staff has asked our Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan consultant (Carter and Burgess, Inc.) to evaluate what the best location for the City's first recreation center would be. The consultant will also be looking at what the right number of total recreation facilities such as these will need to be as the city continues to grow and build out over the next 20-30 years.

We hope to have a recommendation from the consultant to bring forward to the City Council for their final consideration within the next two months.

Once approved, we will then provide additional information through the City's web site location as well as Channel 6 and through the local print media.

Should you or others have any additional questions regarding this, please feel free to contact me or our office at any time by calling (972) 335-5517.

Sincerely,

Rick Wieland

Will citizens have input into the location?

Dear Anonymous,

While the City Council will ultimately have the final approval regarding the location of the recreation facility, I will tell you that the Council has typically provided a forum in which citizens can provide input on matters such as this.

I would also encourage you to provide me with your comments and I will pass those along to the consultant that is analyzing this.

Please feel free to contact me at any time by telephone (972) 335-5517 or by e-mail (rwieland@ci.frisco.tx.us)

I appreciate your input and support for this project and look forward to speaking to you in the future.

Sincerely,

Rick Wieland

Could you tell me when the new aquatic center will be finished? I feel that compared to the number of residents Frisco has and will have, one public pool only open from 1 to 8 is not meeting the needs of the residents. Our family has to drive to Plano and Allen to swim. Also, what will be included in the aquatic center?

Dear Anonymous,

Thanks for your message regarding the future aquatic center. As you might know, on September 14, 2002 a bond election was held in which the Recreation and Aquatic Center were approved by the community. This $20 million dollar project will be seperated into two seperate projects over the next several years as bonds are sold by the City for various projects that were also approved in September 2002.

The first phase will be for $11.0 million and will include the design and construction of the Recreation Center.

The second phase will be for the remaining $9.0 million and will include the design and construction of the aquatic center. This aquatic center will include both indoor as well as outdoor aquatic programming. It should be noted that the City Council has not yet determined when the sale of bonds for the aquatic center phase of the center will be sold.

While not yet programmed, it is anticipated that the Aquatic Center will include such things as:

* Indoor traditional pool (25 yd x 25 yd) learn to swim programs, water aerobics, lap swimming, etc.
* Indoor leisure aquatic programming to include zero depth entry, children's play area, water slide, small lazy river, etc.
* Outdoor leisure aquatic components such as water slides that differ from the indoor features, children's water playground, zero depth entry areas, dressing room areas, concession, etc.

It should be noted that all of the elements referenced above are subject to budgeting constraints and the final project may include some or potentially all of these elements.

Area facilities in which the Bond Committee visited that helped to guide some of the potential design elements were found at the City of Allen's new natatorium, City of Coppell's Family Recreation and Aquatic Center, City of Plano's Oak Point Center.

Once completed, I believe that the residents of Frisco will have one of the finest recreation and aquatic centers in the country.

Should you have any additional questions regarding the future Recreation and Aquatic Center, please feel free to contact me at any time. We would love to share our enthusiasm about this great project.

Sincerely,

Rick Wieland
