I was told when I signed up with my local phone comapny here in Frisco that the LATA-wide service (for which the company charges almost $25 a month) was a requirement in Frisco. After asking around, I found that some folks got the same story, but others who live in Frisco and use the same phone company, don't have that service and can still call all of our neighboring cities like Plano without paying long distance charges.
Can you please give me the straight scoop on what is and is not required?
It could save me (and others) $300/year!

All Southwestern Bell customers in Frisco are required to pay a charge of $9.60 per month for expanded area calling scope. This allows the free calling area to include Plano, Dallas, etc. Non-Southwestern Bell customers are not required to pay the $9.60, but calling plans may differ depending upon the company.
