We're getting ready to build and we'd like to know if the building code allows for access to the storage space above the garage?
The floor plan has the area above the garage empty and it seems perfect for storage. We were going to ask builder to include door from neighboring gameroom to this space but would like to know if there are any restrictions on this.

It is possible to use this space as attic storage. The floor of this space must be constructed for limited attic storage. These design calculations must be incorporated into the engineered framing design of the home. The door to the space must be an exterior weather-stripped type. It is a good practice to provide a light, but not required unless equipment is in the space.

You can contact me directly if you have any additional question regarding the construction of your home.
