I have two questions regarding new signals that have been constructed with the recent widening project along Eldorado.

At Eldorado and Teel, I noticed a while back [prior to the beginning of this project] that metal poles had been erected at three corners of the intersection, replacing three of the respective wooden poles that had been used for the temporary traffic signals. But when TxDot widened Eldorado, they constructed four brand new poles for the permanent signals. Why couldn't mast arms be attached to the gray poles that were already in place? Why were metal poles installed if they weren't intended to be permanent?

Second, why were right-turn heads removed from the Eldorado/Legacy intersection? Was this to allow for U-turns to be made? And will the same thing happen to the new signals at Teel?

I also have a question with regard to future signals. In other threads, I've seen mentions of an annual spreadsheet that prioritizes the need for signals at intersections in which no signal is planned. Is this spreadsheet posted on the city website? I couldn't find it with any of the other engineering forms.

Ryan,

The intersection of Eldorado & Teel was a complicated part of the widening project because of so many large underground facilities in that area. The old wooden poles were in the way of construction and, due to the large amount of underground work necessary, the permanent traffic signal poles could not be installed at the start of the project. Instead, the smaller "metal poles" you describe were installed at locations that allowed the temporary traffic signal to remain in operation during construction without having to relocate the poles multiple times. (And the traffic signal heads could be moved around on the span wires as needed.) Only after the underground work was complete could the permanent traffic signal poles be installed at their proper locations and with their much wider and deeper foundations.

Yes, the right-turn traffic signal heads were removed from the intersection of Eldorado & Legacy in order to allow u-turns to be made (and because traffic volumes do not warrant the right-turn signals yet). This will not happen at the intersection of Eldorado & Teel because there is not the same need for u-turn movements as there is at Legacy.

We do not post the list that prioritizes future traffic signals because it is a living document which continually changes as new data is collected. In addition, we do not want to mislead people into thinking the list is an exact representation of the order in which future traffic signals will be installed. Instead, the installation of traffic signals at the top of the list is dependent upon many factors such as funding issues (which can vary by location) and feasibility issues (which may depend upon acquiring right-of-way, relocating utilities, coordinating with roadway construction timelines, etc.).
