What are the city ordinances for planting trees in the small patch of land between sidewalks and streets on residential lots? This landscaping adds so much value to a neighborhood long-term, yet you rarely see it done in Frisco.

Christopher,

Per City ordinance, trees cannot be planted within four feet of a curb or sidewalk.

What is the reasoning behind that city ordinance?

James,

There are two reasons for doing so. The first is that there typically a water line one or two feet behind the back of curb and trees can not be planted on top of a water line due to potential damage to the water line by tree roots and the fact that the water line will require maintenance at some point in time which will damage the trees.

The second reason is that tree roots will cause damage to streets and sidewalks over time and the greater the separation the more likely that the impact will be minimized.
