The entrance to the Kings Gardens subdivision is very close to the Legacy/Main street and Teel/Mainstreet intersections and the timimg of those lights and traffic patterns make making a left hand turn onto main out of this subdivision very difficult. Is it in the plans to put signal lights including a protect left signal at this location? If so, when will they be constructed? If not, how does someone go about getting this looked into for future development?

The intersection of Majestic Gardens and Main Street is a likely candidate for a traffic signal in the future. At this point, we do not expect the signal to be built until Majestic Gardens is extended south of Main Street.

I will have our staff conduct a signal warrant study for this location to see if the existing conditions would warrant a signal before Majestic Gardens is extended to the south.

Brian-Any update to the study? With new businesses coming and the increased traffic since 2006, have any new plans developed to add a light to Majestic Gardens? Is it the size of the neighborhood in comparison to the Trails that is currently keeping KG from also getting a light? (I know it is MUCH smaller, but that is the only reason I can think of.) :-)

The physical size of neighborhoods is not considered when installing traffic signals. Instead it is based on an analysis of traffic volumes in all directions.

We maintain a priority list of intersections considered for a traffic signal based on total traffic volumes and the analysis of conflicting movements. We then assign our limited funding to the top priorty locations.

In 2007, our priority list showed that the intersection of Main Street and Majestic Gardens ranked 8th in terms of total traffic volumes among intersections that are not yet signalized, and ranked about the same overall in terms of all of the analysis we perform.

We are still in the process of recalculating the priority list for 2008, with updated traffic counts that have been collected recently. The Majestic Gardens intersection will remain on the list and we will continue to consider it in terms of its priority and our funding.

Are the traffic lights for the eastbound 121 access road under Frisco control? The one at Preston doesn't conform to the standards in the TEXAS MANUAL ON UNIFORM TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES (TMUTCD). The manual states that signals will be located
"(a) Not less than 40 ft. beyond the stop line.
(b) Not more than 180 ft. beyond the stop line unless a supplemental near side signal face is
(c) As near as practical to the line of the driver's normal view, if mounted over the roadway. "
This one is clearly less than 20 feet beyond the stop line and can not be seen when stopped at the stop line.

The traffic signals along SH 121 are controlled by the City of Plano.

However, I did load up an aerial of the intersections of SH 121 and Preston Road to check the distances. On eastbound SH 121, I measure 67 feet from the stop line to the signals for southbound Preston, and I measure 64 feet from the stop line to the signals for northbound Preston. (To be clear, the “stop line” is the white line painted on the pavement to show motorists where to stop at the traffic signal. This line is in advance of the street you are about to cross and also in advance of a crosswalk, if any.)

To help you gauge these distances when driving, keep in mind that travel lanes are 12 feet wide, and medians are typically wider. You are crossing two lanes at southbound Preston so the signals are a minimum of 24 feet away. You are crossing three lanes at northbound Preston so the signals are a minimum of 36 feet away. Also, signal poles are usually placed about 10 feet or more beyond the edge of the roadway, which adds more distance. Finally, the stop line is painted on the roadway and is never located right at the edge of the travel lanes you are crossing, so that adds even more distance. In this case, the stop line at southbound Preston is painted about 30 feet before the edge of a crossing travel lane, and the stop line at northbound Preston is painted about 14 feet before the edge of a crossing travel lane (at its closest).

Motorists should be sure to stop at the painted stop line and then they will have no trouble seeing the traffic signals. Even if they stop beyond the painted stop line, the width of the cross street and the placement of the pole ensure that the signals are 40 feet from the stopped vehicle.
