Several months ago, the lanes of east-bound Eldorado were changed so that the turn lane could also go straight. I assume this was to improve flow of traffic. I wondered if restriping the west-bound lanes was concidered for the same reason? It looks like the width of the west-bound Eldorado would support 3 lanes. Why not create a left only, straight and right only lane?

Yes, restriping westbound Eldorado as you suggest was considered. However, it was decided not to do so. The current lane being used for westbound through movements is already offset from the receiving lane on the other side. If we shifted it over another lane, the offset would become even larger. It was determined that this offset would be too severe, especially if a westbound car were to enter the intersection at full speed. To maximize safety at the intersection, we are maintaining the westbound lanes as they are until the intersection is reconstructed.

Because this intersection experiences congestion due to its current configuration, we have worked it out with TxDOT that this intersection will be reconstructed at the beginning of the Preston Road widening project. Construction on Preston Road is expected to begin in early 2009.
