Someone in my neighborhood (Arbors at Willow Bay) said that the City of Frisco owns the trees in my yard on the side of the sidewalk by the street. They also said that we are not supposed to put stone borders around the trees or else the city might take action. Is this true? And what is the "action" the city would take? Thanks.

The trees between the sidewalk and the curb are “street trees” that are required in all new developments after April 2011 per the Zoning Ordinance. This area is part of the street right-of-way which is owned by the City but the landscaping including the turf and trees are the responsibility of the property owner to maintain. The trees were located by the builder or his landscape contractor as to not conflict with the underground utlities. Any other improvements such as a stone border could interfere with maintenance of the water line and therefore are not permitted. Therefore, these borders can be removed by the City at its discretion.

Per advice of the City’s Landscape Architects, stone borders around trees, regardless of the tree’s location, are actually harmful to the tree in the short and long term. The weight is detrimential to the root sytems, and while decorative, the borders deteriorate over time as the tree grows.
