The Parks Department is in the process of applying hydro-mulch to the newly irrigated medians around Lowe's east of Preston Road (Warren, Gaylord, and Ohio), as well as medians on Rolater Road, east of Preston.

These medians will be watered lightly several times a day until germination is achieved and sufficient root growth is established. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this daytime watering might cause.

I was just on Rolater at 3 pm on Saturday afternoon. It is 100 degrees and the sprinklers are going. I don't believe this is doing any good. I realize the new grass needs to be watered but I think there must be a better time like late in the evening or early morning to do this.

As explained in my earlier post, the Rolater medians east of Preston Road have had hydro-mulch applied (Bermuda grass). Frequent light watering is needed to achieve germination and root establishment. Hydro-mulch is not very forgiving, particularly in hot weather, if allowed to dry out. The most critical time is when the seeds first germinate, and the afternoon watering is essential to avoid to much drying . We are currently watering these medians three times per day. There are twenty-one zones that have to be watered, so it takes a little while to run through the cycle. The start times are 9:00 am, 1:00 pm, and 5:00 pm.

As germination and sufficient root development are established, the watering will be scaled back accordingly. We normally water our fully established medians between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am. Once again I apologize for any inconvenience.

We will also be applying hydro-mulch to the first Main Street median (Hwy 720) east of Teel Road on August 6.

Will the recently planted trees along the Hillcrest, Ohio, and Lebanon medians that have died be replaced this fall?

Is anyone checking on the sprinkers on Rolator? The sprinklers seem to be at unusual angles and there is so much run off that it is running down the street and also forming large puddles!

Irrigation personnel have been working on sprinkler head adjustment on the Rolater medians the past two days. We have also had some problems with overspray due to the higher than usual southerly winds. These medians have been recently hydro-mulched, but we hope to be able to cut the daytime watering back in a few days.

Any median trees that were planted last season and have died, will be replaced in early Fall or Winter.
