We are adding an addition to our house which will take the the sq.ft. from below 6000ft. to over 6000 sq. ft.. Is it necessary to retrofit the house with an indoor sprinkler system ( a large expense with potential damage to the home) or does the ordinance apply to new contruction only? Thanks

The Building Code and Fire Code Ordinances state the same language. Group R Division 3 Single family dwellings shall be provided with an automatic fire extinguishing system when greater than two (2) stories in height or when the gross floor area exceeds six thousand (6000) feet. The garage area is included, the outside porches are not included in the calculation. If you will call this office at 972-335-5580, staff will assist you with your calculations.
