I thought that Mainstreet in downtown was being widened, but now that it has been somewhat cleaned up it doesn't have any more traffic lanes than before. Why all of the construction if there is still going to end up being a traffic bottleneck in downtown? Why was the parallel parking put back in?

Ms. Draper,

In the years preceding the reconstruction of the Old Town portion of Main Street many meetings were held to discuss this exact issue. At that time, the Downtown Merchants Association and City Council determined that the preservation of an intimate atmosphere, through the use of on street parking, was essential to maintaining the historical image of our City. To accommodate this on street parking, “chokers” were placed on Main Street from County to 3rd Street. These “chokers” provide us the flexibility to open the two additional lanes through downtown when the City’s growth exceeds the desire to protect our heritage. Our Transportation Department will need some time, once the construction is complete, to analyze the affects of the project on traffic patterns. To help alleviate a possible “bottle-neck” downtown, attention is also being given to building the second half of Eldorado Parkway from Preston to the Tollway to establish an additional “high-flow” east-west route.

What kind of time frame can be expected for this attention to ElDorado from Preston to the Tollway? And will that include a significant upgrade to the Preston & ElDorado intersection? When coming South on Preston in the morning, sometimes it backs up for more than a mile at that light and is frustrating when only a handful of cars want to make a right hand turn.
