With the new police station there were plans on building an indoor shooting/training facility after the fact. I believe that this had been approved and is going to be built now.

Are there any plans on making the shooting range open to the public? Personally I would very much love to shoot within our city instead of having to travel to Plano or McKinney and what a better place than side by side with our officers. It would be a great opportunity for gun safety and education considering the family focus of our community, not to mention the potential revenue for the city from classes and open shooting sessions...

Mr. Bishop,

There are currently no plans to operate the range on a commercial basis. Citizens who attend the Citizens Police Academy will have the opportunity to shoot one time on the range, but we don't plan to have it open to the public. Personnel will be scheduled for training and qualification while they are working during their normal duty hours.

It would require officers to be away from their regular assignments to operate the range as a public range. With the accompanying liability associated with it, we do not think operating the range for the public is a wise investment of our resources and would interfere with the training cycle.
