Does the City have any plans to install a traffic light at the intersection of Preston Vineyard and Preston?

The intersection of Preston Road and Preston Vineyard is currently being monitored for a possible traffic signal. We do anticipate that once Preston Vineyards is extended west of Preston, a signal will likely be needed. It appeared in 2008 that the road was going to be built with some new development west of Preston, but the downturn in the economy put those developments on hold.

When deciding where to place a traffic signal, we conduct a traffic signal warrant. In order to be warranted, the traffic volumes must be high enough on each roadway for a certain number of hours of the day or we can consider the number of crashes at the intersection over a 12 month period. Even though a signal may satisfy volume warrants, it doesn’t mean a signal will be installed. It only means it is warranted and can be installed if needed. Other things we consider are future growth, proximity to other nearby signals (Rolater and Wade in this case), and crashes. Signals that become too closely spaced often result in congestion along an arterial because it becomes very difficult to provide good signal progression on the corridor.

There is a long list of intersections that are evaluated and prioritized for funding each year. This location is not at the top of the priority list now; however, it will continue to be monitored. In summary, we do expect a signal at this location once Preston Vineyards extends west of Preston.
