I see on this month's bill that the Utility Billing is taking a step backwards. Instead of allowing automated payments with a credit card or bank draft (like every other utility or bill out there) the city is dropping VISA and will charge a 2% fee for any other credit card? This sounds like the opposite of progress to me.

Thank you for your concerns regarding our Utility Billing payment options. We have several options available for our customers at this time.
Citizens can pay with:
• Cash (in person at City Hall)
• Automated bank draft
• debit card (Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
• credit card (Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
• on-line bill payment with their individual bank.
We do provide an on-line payment option through the City website with the above mentioned credit cards, as well. All credit card payments accepted by the City are assessed a 2% convenience fee for processing, whether on-line or in person.
In July 2011, the City changed credit card servicing banks. With this banking change, we can no longer charge a convenience fee for VISA credit or debit cards, which prevents us from accepting this payment method at the UB Office, Municipal Court or Development Services Department, effective January 1, 2012.
I’m sorry for any inconveniences that this may cause. If you would like to discuss further, please contact me.
