I need some clarification on right of way at Main Street from drivers off FM423. Drivers heading north on 423 turn right onto Main St heading east have a yield and a sign indicating their own lane. Drivers heading south on 423 turn left onto Main St heading east have no signs so I assume they have the right of way. Problem is when drivers who were from south bound 423 want to turn into the shopping area by Sonic and the Bank of America they have to cut across all lanes to get to the shopping area turn lane. Sometime the former northbound 423 drivers now on Main yield, sometimes not. If they are to yield, could the yield sign possibly be changed to a Stop sign. Different drivers do different things so it is confusing. It is confusing to have a yield sign and a sign indicating you have your own lane.

The yellow warning sign you mention does not assign the right-of-way, but simply warns that two roadways are merging. The yield sign always controls the right-of-way, and is enforceable by the police. Drivers faced with a yield sign should always yield to traffic that crosses their path, even if they have their own lane. (This is a similar situation to the Dallas Parkway frontage road system where drivers on the frontage road yield to cars coming from the ramp.) You are correct that the yield sign is on Main Street to allow traffic from southbound FM 423 to be able to enter the shopping area. If someone does not feel comfortable making this movement, there is another driveway further east that can be used to access the shopping center.

If you do not see every vehicle stopping at the yield sign, this is not necessarily wrong. A yield sign means that traffic only needs to stop if there is a vehicle coming on the conflicting movement, otherwise traffic can proceed through the sign with caution. A stop sign would force everyone from northbound FM 423 to stop and would back up traffic into the FM 423 intersection (while reducing traffic efficiency and fuel economy).

The intersection of Main Street and FM 423 will be improved as part of TxDOT's widening project for FM 423, and this yield situation will go away at that time. (Construction of this section is currently estimated to begin at the end of this year.)

In the meantime, I will review the intersection to see if any changes to the signs or striping can be made to clarify the yield situation.
