We have received many inquiries on this and have asked Verizon to comment. They expect to have a statement to us tomorrow.

Here is the information on the Verizon plans:

Verizon has approached the City of Frisco about providing FiOS TV here, and the Company recently received approval from the Texas Public Utility Commission to do so.

Verizon will need to place fiber-optic lines past residences and businesses before it can offer FiOS Internet or TV service, and it will notify residents before its contractors begin construction in your neighborhoods.

Verizon has Web sites that provide more information on the FiOS services it offers: www.verizonfios.com or www.verizon.com/fios. Residents also can register to be notified when FiOS services are available.

Frisco is excited that residents will soon have another choice for broadband and TV services. Competition brings out the best in choice, in innovation, and in price.

Have you been informed on whether the intent is to service all of Frisco or just a limited area? Are there any time frames that have been established?

This announcement has elicited many questions, but unfortunately, I have few answers at this time. Verizon has asked that I refer you to the previously listed website http://www.verizon.com/fios. This will allow you to learn about FiOS and test your addresses for availability. While your addresses will not yet be in the system until Verizon opens for sales later this year, by testing you will be given the opportunity to be placed on a listing for notification as service becomes available. The key is that residents must test their addresses and fail before being invited to be placed on a notification list. Of course if you see Verizon trucks in your neighborhoods or receive a door hanger notifying you of impending work, your neighborhood is in the latest zone of progress and FiOS is coming. Thank you for your patience.

The two companies that have been working with cable between 423 and DNT along El Dorado are Grande Communication and Time Warner Cable. The status of these jobs are as follows: the Grande Cable is completed except for backfill and compaction. The Time Warner job has some final graded to be completed and they have some utility boxes to set and pull cable in the conduit that was placed. Verizon is not currently on El Dorado.

Does anyone know why Verizon can't seem to build out in western Frisco. I've been in Frisco for over 6 years and they can't seem to build out the Fiber optics to our neighborhood in Lone Star Ranch.

Is it Permits, Profits, Preference? I know hundreds of my neighbors would switch to Fios if it became avaialble.

Does anyone in the city have a clue why the delay????

Verizon has a current expansion project going on in Frisco and has received all of the permits for construction that have been requested from the City. The scope of the project is limited to the south-central quadrant of the City at this time.

Staff has inquired as to when Verizon plans to have this project completed and service will be available, as well as when they plan to expand further. To date they have not been willing to provide us with any information at all on these timelines. The decisions on where and when to expand their service area are wholly the control of Verizon and have not been limited by any action or regulation of the City.

Has Verizon applied for any new permits for construction outside of the south-central quadrant of the city?

Just checking in - Has Frisco received any requests from Verizon about new permits?

Or do they have any new information about Fios?

No, there is no change from the above message, which says the city has not received a permit since October 2008. The information in the 8/20/2009 answer above is still valid. Also the Verizon web sites listed in the 6/18/2008 answer are still available.

Isn't Verizon or ATT Uverse supposed to offer services to everyone in Frisco under law as they are coming as a "utility"? Why is it then that I live in the Stewart Creek Estates off Lebanon and the surrounding neighborhoods can get Verizon or ATT Uverse and I cannot? What are my legal remedies / options?

Franchise utilities are now under the regulation of the Public Utility Commission of Texas. It is a business decision to provide services to subdivisions. Please contact Verizon or AT&T and request services through them. If you need additional information, please feel free to call me at 972-292-5415.

Thank you,

Ben

With the new caps placed on data by AT&T, I need another broadband solution to replace UVerse. Are there any other options besides Time Warner and Clear? Are there any petitions out there to show Verizon the amount of interest for their service? I would love to have it here north of Rolater.

Mr. Grimsley,

I have contacted Verizon about current FIOS service and expansion of their network within Frisco and I was told they have shifted capital away from North Texas towards the East Coast. They are working to establish franchise cable / data there. They do not have any current plans to expand within Frisco. Cable services varies dependent upon your location within the city. Cable & Data utility providers, along with electric, gas, and telephone utility providers, are governed at the state level by the Public Utility Commission (PUC).

Thank you,

Ben

I contacted Verizon awhile back to ask if they are doing any more development in Frisco, and the rep on the phone indicated they would be starting back up with construction after the first of the year. Could you possibly find out if there is any truth to that? I am particularly interested in the Bella Casa area, but would like to know in general, as well.

Thanks,
Randy

This morning I saw a company laying orange conduit along the southbound dallas parkway, just south of main street. Usually orange conduit is for fiber. Any ideas?

@Ben - This is disappointing news. It's a shame Verizon has decided to abandon their plans. We need more competition if our bandwidth speeds and customer service options are ever going to get out of the gutter.

Are there any plans by the city to lobby Google to bring their fiber service to Frisco?

We completed an extensive survey for Google some time ago but were not selected by them. There are no plans to lobby further.

Curt, Just wondering why are there no plans on lobbying further. Is there not enough a push from the residents. Google fiber is going to be a big big asset. Look at how it helped the start-up activity in Kansas. I think the city should seriously look at pursuing it. It will be a magnet in North Texas for both residential and business growth.

The City did take another run at Google after learning we were not selected as a Google Fiber city. Unfortunately without success as Google has provided no information regarding their selection criteria. Over 1100 cities completed surveys and competed for Google fiber in 2010. Google has announced they are going to implement Austin next and then on to Provo, Utah. Google has provided no other information regarding future locations.

We should lobby Google to bring its services to Frisco.
