What plans are there to address the unmowed grassy areas and dead trees at Beaver Bend Park? Also, is there plans to remove and replace dead trees in the median from Lebanon down Legacy?

Bridgett

The park has an area near Legacy that was established in Bermuda grass for a practice area and for people to play sports. The remainder of the park was planted in native grasses. There are some areas that were planted in a short grass mix less than 8-9 Inches and some area were planted with a taller mix that will grow in the 18 to 24 inches.

The Parks and Recreation Board approved additional funding to alter some of the areas that were planted, based on comments from the Citizens of the area. We have a project out to bid right now to plant additional short grass seed in the areas behind the homes on the east side of the entrance on Druid Hills. They will also plant seeds near the pavilion and in the areas around the playground. These areas will be mown and the shorter grasses will establish in these areas.

Last summer was one of the worst in history to establish grass, so the park does not look quite the way we had intended. Hopefully, with the additional seeds being planted and some rain this spring the grasses will come in thicker and have a more uniform look.

The trees along Legacy have been replaced once. Our project manager on this project said there is a portion of the median that holds water and he is aware that the replacement trees in this area have died again. They planted bald cypress trees that typically grow in very wet conditions. They are scheduled to be replaced again once the crew can get to this area of town. They may wait a bit more for the area to dry up and allow the tress a chance to become established during the dryer months.

Thanks again for your note and if you should have any additional questions, please feel free to let me know.

There are numerous dead trees at Beavers Bend Park. What are the plans for tree replacement?

Bridgett,

Our staff indicates that we are currently working to have the dead trees at the park replaced as soon as possible.

I am hopeful that this will be accomplished within the next 30 days.

Should you have any additional questions regarding this, please feel free to let me or our staff know.

Thanks again for your questions.

Would it be possible to have additional trash cans in Beavers Bend park? The only trash can is located next to the children's area. It can get pretty nasty from the pet waste deposits, even when the pet owner is using plastic bags.
Thanks

First of all, thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will ask our staff to look at possible areas in which to provide more litter recepticles for the park.

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to let me know.
