I just read an article that other cities in the Metroplex (Fort Worth and Arlington) are considering banning smoking from all public places, including restaurants and bars. Has Frisco given any thought to similiar legislation?

The City Council has discussed this issue, including most recently at their summer work session. However, at this time there is not an active effort to bring forward a City ordinance. In research about what several surrounding cities were doing in this regard, we determined that Frisco's requirements were substantially the same. Frisco requires an engineered smoke abating system.

Can the City Council discuss this in an open forum to see if the majority of the citizens would be in favor of a smoking band? Instead of following what other cities are not doing, maybe the City of Frisco can follow the Surgeons Generals recommendations --- http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2006pres/20060627.html ---and lead North Texas on this issue. How would someone ask the City Council to openly discuss this issue at a meeting, come up with a smoking ban proposal and then vote on it?

Yes, the Council can discuss the matter in open sesion.

You might want to contact the Council members directly to express your concerns and ask that they bring forward a proposal. The Council members' contact information is available here on the City website.

Further, any citizen can appear before Council with their questions, bring forward information, or ask that they consider adopting ordinances. There is a citizen comments section of each regular agenda at 7:30pm.
