I noticed many of the new streetlights on Main Street are on or in the middle of the new sidewalks. Is this in accordance with ADA and other design requirements?

Thank you for your inquiry.

The ADA currently requires a minimum width (sidewalk) of 36 where obstacles (lights, signs, poles) are within a path of travel. We have directed the contractor to build accordingly. A formal inspection will be conducted before the job is accepted.

I live off Main Street west of the Tollway (toward Little Elm), and noticed not all communities have side walk on Main Street. Isn't that a city requirement?

You are correct: developers are required by the City to construct sidewalks along major roadways such as Main Street; however, most of the subdivisions along Main Street west of the Tollway were constructed before that requirement was instated.

The City is currently completing the second phase of an on-going sidewalk construction program. Although our efforts thus far have concentrated on routes in the vicinity of schools and parks, we plan to extend the program to other areas in the future as funds continue to be made available.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.
