I recently cancelled my land line and switched to a VoIP system using Google voice. The instructions said that 911 would not work over the phone and I thought they meant that the location would not be given, but I tried to contact 911 several times on the VoiP phone and it never picked up. So does the police and fire departments have non-911 emergency numbers available?

972.292.6010 which is published as our non-emergency number, but rings in the communications center. Due to google voice having one number for home, business and mobile, we assume they would have no way to identify where you are calling from. VoIP companies handle 9-1-1 calls in a variety of ways and citizens should take that into account when deciding which to choose.
