Do you know when the west side will open for 2 lanes each direction?

TxDOT's contractor is still working on completing the west side. They have currently poured two of the proposed 3 lanes and still have to complete driveway and side street tie-ins as well as finishing left turn lanes. TxDOT's current estimate for placing traffic on the west side is February.

Hi, I'm looking at buying a home in Creekside in Preston and currently live out of state. Is there going to be a light built at Preston/Mockingbird Lane at the entrance?

The installation of traffic signals follows a nationally standardized process that traffic engineers must follow. There is a set of Traffic Signal Warrants that must be satisfied before a traffic signal can be installed, most of which are based on traffic volumes. Not every street can be given a traffic signal, so traffic counts are a very large factor in deciding which streets will be signalized (the busier streets should be signalized instead of less busy streets), and then again traffic volumes are used in prioritizing locations that are competing for the City’s limited funding.

Mockingbird Lane has been selected as the location of a future traffic signal. The next step is determining when it meets the warrants to actually have a signal installed. Mockingbird Lane intersects with Preston Road, which is a TxDOT roadway. Therefore, TxDOT will also need to approve the installation of a traffic signal at this location. TxDOT follows a strict process where a location cannot be signalized until it actually reaches the traffic volumes necessary to warrant the signal. The City evaluates a long list of locations each year with updated traffic volume counts to determine if the signal warrant volume thresholds are met, and then prioritizes the installation of a traffic signal based on available funding. The most recent counts and signal warrant analysis was conducted at this location in the fall of 2011 and the results indicated that it does not meet the signal warrant volume thresholds. Therefore, the City will continue to evaluate this location each year to determine when it meets the signal warrant volume thresholds to move it up on the traffic signal installation priority list.

I also wanted to let you know that the TxDOT Preston Road widening project between US 380 and Main Street is nearing completion. It is in the final stages, which is to complete and open the six-lane divided roadway on Preston Road south of Mockingbird Lane between Eldorado Parkway and Main Street in the spring. The completion of this project will significantly improve the traffic conditions on Preston Road.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Thanks!

Online and newspaper reports claim that the Preston project (between 380 and Main) will be done on 2/1. It does not appear that those reports are accurate.

Can you please provide an update on the schedule and completion?

The work on Preston Road in January has been slower. In addition to being delayed due to weather for a few days, the contractor is preparing for the paving crew to come and finish the turn lanes and driveways. The paving crew is currently on another project. They are expected to be on the project starting February 6. Once the turn lanes are completed, we can work with the contractor to open, at least partially, the southbound lanes.

TxDOT has updated the competion date to May 2012. Newspaper and online reports will start reflecting that information.

There has been virtually no work done on this project for quite some time. The winter has been exceedingly mild, so what is causing the delays? Why can't TxDOT move this project up?

We have reached a point during construction that it is not quite as obvious that work is being progressed. Many of the larger items of work are done, so much of the big equipment is gone. There are still crews on Preston pushing forward toward completion, but they are smaller crews and more spread out along the project.
We would all like them to finish faster. TxDOT provides a certain number of days to complete the project before penalties begin. The contractor is expected to complete the project before the contract time runs out. We will continue to work with TxDOT to keep the project moving towards completion.
Again, we apologize for the inconvenience during construction, but when complete, the construction pains we have experienced should be well worth it. We are getting close. Things should get significantly better in the next couple of months as the Preston Road project nears completion.
Please feel free to contact me should you have any further questions.

I see on the recent engineering report that the completion date has changed from 5-1-12 to 6-29-12. Can you provide us residents who deal with the traffic on this section everyday and it's backups, what has occured that the project has gone from the end of 2011 to March 2012 to 5-1-12 to now basically the end of June 2012. The weather has not been affected and I don't know if utilities, permits, etc.. has been an issue but any insight you all could provide would be much appreciated.

Apologize for the delayed response. We have been working with TxDOT and Sinacola on some minor construction changes. While these changes were being worked on, Sinacola was pursuing the completion of Custer Road. We are back on track and have some changes for Preston Road scheduled for next week which should help traffic flow and allow Sinacola to push the project to completion. We are now optimistic that it may not take until late June to complete the project.

Is there an official opening date in May from TxDOT? The pace of work has been unconscionably slow this entire year.

Now that part of Preston Road between Eldorado and Main Street is open, I was wondering if the intersection of Preston and Main will be finished now or will it be worked on when the widening of Main Street to Custer begins. Because looks like there is a lot of work to be done for about 200 meters on Preston north of Main.

Construction of all of the lanes on Preston will be completed with the current project. No work on Preston Road is included with the Main St. project.

Is there an updated completion date for the work at the intersection and just north of Eldorado/Main?

It sure appears as though Main Street and Preston intersection work is stalled again. Is there a new completion date for this part of the project?

Why is this so difficult to complete? It seems as though the same big hole in the middle of the road has been in place for almost a year.

Work has resumed on Preston Road and we are not anticipating any further delays to the completion of the project. The project is now expected to be completed by August 1, 2012.
