Can you please explain the correct traffic pattern at the median on Main by the Y. Who has the right of way and should everyone stay to the right? Every time I make a left turn out of the Y, it seems like all the drivers are unsure as to whose turn it is and where should the cars wait on the median.

Traffic on Main Street always has the right of way over traffic coming from Kyser Way or the YMCA. Therefore, traffic coming out of the YMCA should always yield to eastbound and westbound through traffic on Main Street and to westbound Main Street traffic that is turning left into the YMCA.

When traffic leaves the YMCA and waits in the median to complete the maneuver, this would be the correct traffic pattern: There should only be one car from the YMCA waiting in the median at a time. Therefore, the first car in line to leave the YMCA needs to make sure there is no northbound car waiting in the median ahead of them (or a car waiting to turn left from eastbound Main Street). Then, when they see a gap in eastbound Main Street, they can proceed to the median opening and stay on the right side of it (being careful not to block the westbound left-turn lane). The median opening should be treated like a little road, with traffic staying on the right.

As the car sits in the median, it now works as if the car is waiting next to a one-way street. This means that the YMCA car needs to let all westbound through traffic and westbound left-turn traffic go in front of it before it can go. So if a westbound car enters the left-turn lane while the YMCA car is waiting, the westbound car gets to go around the YMCA car first.

In the short term, if a motorist does not feel comfortable making these maneuvers, we recommend that the YMCA car turn right and then get into a left-turn lane on Main Street in order to make a u-turn at a different location. In the long term, a traffic signal is being designed for the intersection of Main Street and Kyser Way and construction should start by the end of 2011.
