The traffic heading east on Eldorado to Coit seems to backup almost to Grandbury Dr at Panther Creek Estates. Is there any plan to help ease the traffic in the morning.

There are several improvement projects in the planning stages. The widening of Coit Road from Main Street to Eldorado Parkway and north to the middle school is currently under design. In addition, the widening of Eldorado Parkway from Hillcrest Road to Independence is also under design. One project will be constructed first, and the other will follow behind it. Which ever project does go first will include a traffic signal at the intersection of Coit & Eldorado.

At this point, it is unclear which project will proceed first to construction as each is dependent on the sale of bonds by the City and the County, neither of which are currently selling bonds due to the economy. The earliest that construction could begin on one of these roads would be late 2011, but the funding issue could delay that.

Another improvement that would help the traffic in the area would be the development of a new neighborhood just north of Maus Middle School. Once that neighborhood is built, it will connect a street from Panther Creek Estates to Coit Road, which would give school traffic from Panther Creek Estates a route to the middle school that would not involve using Eldorado Parkway. Although preliminary plans do exist for such a neighborhood, its construction is up to the developer and the City does not currently know when the new neighborhood will be built.

So, what you're basically saying is that there is no solution to help ease traffic until 2012 at the earliest?

Option 1 and 2 require the sale of bonds and the completion of lengthy construction and option 3 relies on a developer to build a subdivision.

Are there perhaps any other "short term" solutions the city has thought about?

It is true that no road improvement solution can be completed before 2012. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate everyone's patience as we undergo these growing pains.

However, we do foresee some improvement to traffic in the area occuring before our road construction projects come along. The most immediate help will come from the Preston Road construction project which is underway. A lot of the eastbound traffic at the intersection of Eldorado & Coit is turning right onto Coit in order to avoid the intersection of Eldorado & Preston. Recent traffic lane changes at the Preston intersection have already improved the amount of traffic that can be served by that traffic signal, and once more of that intersection is paved, its capacity should increase even more. Eventually more people will drive west on Eldorado to Preston rather than east to Coit, which should ease some of the traffic at the Eldorado & Coit intersection.

In addition, the developer continues to move forward with getting approval for plans for a new neighborhood north of Maus Middle School, so it is possible that a new street connection will be made before our road widening projects are completed.

Finally, it is a possibility that the intersection of Coit & Eldorado could have a traffic signal installed before the road widening projects begin. However, traffic signals cannot be installed until the intersection meets certain traffic volume thresholds, and our most recent study of the intersection this month shows that it does not. Our traffic counts show that the heavy traffic in the eastbound direction occurs during a relatively small window of time in the morning and the level of traffic throughout the rest of the day does not warrant a traffic signal. We will continue to monitor the intersection, and once its traffic volumes reach a level that warrants a traffic signal, we will add it to our list of pending traffic signal locations. This list prioritizes the intersections across the City considered for a traffic signal based on total traffic volumes and the analysis of conflicting movements. We then assign our limited funding to the top priority locations.
