Google is planning to trial a fiber optic broadband service and is asking "interested municipalities" to sign up through a Request for Information. Does Frisco plan to participate in the RFI? Details are in the links below:

Yes, the City will submit a coordinated response to the Google RFI (Request for Information) application.

With Google Fiber announcing new candidate cities this week, and the Dallas area not being even considered, is the city still engaged in any way trying to get Google Fiber to Frisco? AT&T, my only provider, is in the process of raising rates again. Competition would benefit the city.

There is no change and the City’s response on 5/30/13 on the Q&A Board is still accurate.

"The City did take another run at Google after learning we were not selected as a Google Fiber city. Unfortunately without success as Google has provided no information regarding their selection criteria. Over 1100 cities completed surveys and competed for Google fiber in 2010. Google has announced they are going to implement Austin next and then on to Provo, Utah. Google has provided no other information regarding future locations."

Are we still perusing this. Looks like google is again looking for more cities to expand. It would be a great asset for Frisco specially with the talk of a datacenter also coming here. In our community I feel we are very restricted with just AT&T and TWC as the only two options for high speed internet.

Google has announced plans to roll out in San Antonio, has already started rolling out in Austin, one would figure this would be the perfect opportunity to 'make another run at Google' considering the kind of explosive growth the city has had since the last time Frisco contacted Google in 2010.

Any chance the city could reach out to At&t about getting on their GigaPower list?

Don't you think 3.5-4 years is a long enough time for revisiting this topic. What department would be looking at the feasibility of pursuing this further. Would it be the Development Services, Economic Development or the Public Works. Google is very forthcoming on what they are requesting from a city to be considered. Below is the link to what they are asking. I know it would be a big effort to provide all the information but it will be a big asset for Frisco if we can make it happen. The next set of cities will be selected at the end of this year.
