Why does this intersection have temporary signals? To my understanding, Preston is as wide as it will ever be at this point. I don't see any plans to widen Wade Blvd. It just seems like permanent signals would make more sense and would allow the internally lit street names to be added when they are added to other intersections along Preston.

Ryan,

There wasn't a traffic signal at that location when Preston Road was widened in 2000. After the widening, there were safety issues at that location and the City decided to expedite the construction of a traffic signal. TxDOT could install a permanent traffic signal in 12 months or a temporary traffic signal in 3 months. For safety reasons, the City elected for the temporary traffic signal in the shorter amount of time.

There are no plans to upgrade this traffic signal at this time because our limited funding is prioritized for installing new traffic signals were no signal currently exits. In the future, when our CIP program is no longer focused on building so many new traffic signals, we will probably come back and upgrade this traffic signal with "permanent" mast arms.
