There was recently a fire in the area and someone said it was due to the dryer. I thought it would be a good time to check the dryer vent in our rental unit.

I'm seeing a LOT of people online saying it is illegal to vent a dryer into the garage. Our vent system not only is built to vent into an inside corner of the garage, at the floor.. the vent hose wasn't attached and was venting into a closed space under the raised water heater.

There are a LOT of units like ours in the area (including the one where the fire happened). Is this against code? I'm not seeing a lot of external vents in the area.

I have received your Q&A Board inquiry regarding dryer vents. The International Residential Code and the International Mechanical Code require that dryer exhaust terminate to the outdoors.

Can you provide me with the approximate time frame when your residence was constructed? There might have been exceptions to the code at the time of construction that may have allowed termination in other locations. At one time, it was acceptable to terminate in a ventilated attic space, but never into a concealed space such as under the water heater as you have described.

Please contact me if you have questions.
