Is this something required for by the ADA or just a warning sound?

Some of our traffic signals are equipped with audible pedestrian buttons for the blind. The sound directs a blind person to the button and instructs the blind pedestrian when the walk indication comes on.

We have installed these devices on a trial basis because national standards are still being adopted. It is very possible that at some point in the future, audible pedestrian signals will be required at all traffic signals just as wheel chair ramps are now required for new sidewalk construction.

The following links provide more information on this subject.

The following links show current drafts for this standard.

Google "Accessible Pedestrian Signal" for more info.
